Nestled in the charming town of Haleiwa, Hawaii, Ray's Kiawe Broiled Chicken offers an authentic taste of traditional Hawaiian rotisserie chicken that locals and visitors rave about. This beloved chicken restaurant specializes in the iconic huli huli (kiawe broiled) chicken, slow-roasted over kiawe wood to lock in a perfect balance of smoky aroma, crisp skin, and juicy tenderness.
The menu focuses on simplicity done right: choose from a succulent Whole Chicken or a satisfying Half Chicken, both bursting with mouthwatering flavor. The Chicken Plate option, which pairs a half chicken with two scoops of steamed white rice and refreshing pineapple coleslaw, is a local favorite that captures the heart of Hawaiian comfort food. The coleslaw itself is a subtly sweet and tangy contrast that brightens each bite, while Grandma’s special sauce adds a delightful, savory kick without overpowering the smoky chicken.
Every mouthful delivers a rich sensory experience — the smoky crispness of the skin, juicy and tender meat, and just the right hint of traditional Hawaiian marinade. Customers have noted that the chicken stands beautifully on its own, yet those who dip into Grandma’s shoyu-based sauce find the flavors deepen to an irresistible level. The inclusion of other sides like the tangy pineapple coleslaw and classic white rice rounds out the plate with familiar island flavors that feel both nostalgic and fresh.
The dining experience is casual and laid-back, very much in sync with Haleiwa’s relaxed vibe. Though there may be a short wait as the chicken is freshly prepared over kiawe wood, guests appreciate the shaded outdoor seating and ample parking, making it a perfect spot to enjoy an unhurried, authentic Hawaiian meal. Many reviewers praise the friendly service and atmosphere, calling Ray’s a “must-visit” for an authentic culinary escape.
Whether you’re craving a flavorful Pollo Asado, the iconic フリフリチキン一羽 (huli huli chicken whole bird), or a simple yet satisfying plate lunch with tender chicken and pineapple coleslaw, Ray’s Kiawe Broiled Chicken delivers with genuine island spirit and unbeatable taste. The value is impressive, with well-portioned servings that can easily satisfy groups, families, or solo diners seeking comfort food infused with Hawaiian tradition.
In short, for anyone seeking an authentic and flavorful Hawaiian chicken experience, Ray’s Kiawe Broiled Chicken promises a smoky, juicy, and soul-satisfying meal that lingers in your memory long after the last bite.
Tasty rotisserie chicken, 15 min wait and in the shade. Got one whole chicken, with coleslaw and grandma’s sauce. Pineapple coleslaw and chicken was bomb! You can skip the sauce, as chicken is tasty enough. Portion is rather small for a whole chicken, good for 2-3 people. Came here in the weekend and plenty of parking lot available. Overall great spot!
This place was delicious! The huli huli chicken was sooooo good and fresh. Wished we ordered more!
We had it two times when we visited Oahu. They changed their location, so make sure contact them before go to find them. The chicken is very delicious and tasty, we ordered two whole chicken for 3 adults and 2 kids.
No fuss just good food here....juicy chicken and hits the spot. Glad I went here for a break of all the poke. You won't be disappointed.
You can’t get more authentic Hawaiian than Ray’s. The chicken was amazingly flavourful, crispy and just the right amount of smoke. On its own the chicken was delicious but gets kicked up a notch with Grandma’s shoyu. $15 for a plate was a good deal. Pineapple slaw was ok. Prepare to wait. But it’s worth it.
Amazing huli huli chicken with pineapple slaws. Meat is very juicy. The only caveat is there’s no place to consume the food outdoors.
They are in Haleiwa only on Sat/Sun. I looked at their website and found they are at 130 Mango Street Wahiawa, HI 96786 on Tues/Thurs, and so happy that fits in to my north coast travel plan. The chicken is so great and delicious. Even the breast meat is tender.
Chicken was from a rotisserie in the parking lot. Fairly quick from time of order to getting it . Chicken was really moist and pineapple coleslaw a nice side . No real atmosphere because your standing in the parking lot waiting to get your food. No place provided to eat so be prepared to go somewhere else to eat.
